A new planetarium in Lytkarino, Russia

The 15th century town of Lytkarino is located just outside the metropolis of Moscow. It is best known as the home the Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant which, since its establishment in 1934, has been a major producer of optical glass and precision optical instruments for the military and the civilian markets. Now Lytkarino also draws attention because of a new and significant digital planetarium for the Moscow region provided by Fulldome.pro.

The story began in 1998 when the Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant installed its first 4-meter dome. This small dome had a very limited content package. The plant’s management wanted to use the dome for student classes and education, so they decided to upgrade it to a bigger, digital planetarium.

Our discussion with management started in 2016, and after four years, the project was formalized. Fulldome.pro provided a 9-meter open dome that featured a decorative cover and an extensive content package with 50+ shows. Additionally, our specialists made a series of recommendation about the design and materials for the room to house the dome.

On 24 May 2021, the Museum of Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant opened the door for visitors to the new 65-seat planetarium, children’s observatory, and optical and meteorological laboratories.

We are proud of our Russian team, who delivered and installed the dome during a period of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions. We are looking forward to the new educational projects in Russia and around the world.
